Phenomenal day on the water today and yesterday aboard Lil Toot!  Capt. Bill and Rae-Ann took 4 classes from Hampden’s 6th grade out on the water the last two days.  On the first day we were pleasantly surprised to find the schooner “Mercantile” in the harbor.  The crew was hoisting the sails as we left we dock; the students got a kick out of how well coordinated their efforts were.  We also had the good fortune to be able to come up alongside the tanker “New England” as it was completing its docking in Bucksport.  On both days the students saw osprey in and around their nests, 2 mature bald eagles (including one eating a carcass on the shore), a harbor porpoise and many seals (including some moms with their pups).  A wonderful time was had by all and the weather couldn’t have been nicer.  The kids got a kick out of seeing Ft. Knox from the water and being able to blow Lil Toot’s horn under the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.  We’re hoping for the same conditions tomorrow for our final field trip with the Hampden school on the Penobscot River.
